Many bodybuilders are seeing their traditional staples of beef, chicken, fresh produce, eggs, and whey cost more than they ever could have imagined.</p>

<p> Before you toss in the iron and take up competitive chess, check out a few quick tips to surviving the recession and higher food prices, as well as a few ideas for benefiting from these tough times. </p>

<p> <strong>Negotiate a cheaper membership. </strong></p>

<p>If you are hit hard by these tough times, imagine what gym owners are going through. Their supplements cost more, their equipment costs more to deliver, and their memberships are likely down. After all, a gym membership is one of the first elective items cut from a budget when money is scarce. Enter your current gym, or one you’d like to join, and tell them you just can’t afford their rates. It’s very possible the owner will cut you a deal and find a discounted rate for you. After all, his costs are fixed. An extra $10 per month from you – even if it’s not the standard $30 rate – will help him pay the bills.</p>

Abs and cardio can also be trained at home, saving more money (and time!). If you save $10 per week by avoiding two trips to the gym and training at home, that adds up to over $500 saved by the end of the year.</p>

<p>Despite the rising food costs and shortages in other countries, a 25 pound bag of rice can still be purchased for $12 to $15, and will supply several weeks’ worth of carbohydrate source. Tuna is still the king of affordable protein sources. You can pick up a 12-pack of tuna cans for $5. While you’re at the bulk store (Sam’s, Costco, or BJ’s), ask for deals. If store sales are down, it’s likely the butcher has a lot of beef that isn’t selling. See if he’ll reduce the price, buy a lot of it, and freeze it. </p>

<p>The explosion of the health industry in recent years has spawned research in natural nutrients that can serve to improve health and well being, with one of the most widely publicized being Essential Fatty Acids (EFA), which are healthy fats that have been shown to reduce cholesterol, enhance immune system function, and assist in normal body function (such as healthy skin, hair, etc). Therefore, these Essential Fatty Acids have become popular in the diets of many, and have caught the attention of the bodybuilding community as a method of providing energy while enhancing long term health.</p>
<p>But can fat actually assist in muscle building? This is a question many bodybuilders are asking, especially considering how some have claimed that certain fat sources can assist in hormone production, and will therefore boost muscle gain when implemented properly within a bodybuilding diet framework. This idea has especially captured the attention of many bodybuilders who have developed a negative view of carbohydrates due to having gained significant body fat on common carbohydrate based muscle building diet routines. </p>
<p>I have no reason to doubt the health benefits offered by healthy Omega 3, 6, and 9 EFA sources, and do recommend using these as part of any diet, regardless of whether bodybuilding is a goal, and therefore all should aim to add some Essential Fatty Acids for health and immune system benefits. Yet, in terms of pure muscle building, carbohydrates are far more anabolic as compared with fat, and therefore many who switch to a diet routine which centers around fat as an energy source as opposed to carbohydrates will find that muscle mass gains decline, sometimes dramatically. The negative stigma attached to carbohydrates which have made higher fat diets popular are not related to an inherent evil in carbohydrate sources (as fruit and raw honey, two examples of simple carbohydrates, are extremely healthy), but due to improperly constructed diet routines which favor carbohydrates as an excessive percentage of overall caloric intake, which causes body fat to rise far more quickly than necessary. Instead of adjusting carbohydrates to a more effective macronutrient ratio in relation to protein and fat, many bodybuilders abandon carbohydrates completely, and find that their results significantly suffer.</p>
<p>Saturated fat is said to play a role in hormone production, and consuming a small portion of calories from saturated fat is acceptable for those who do not suffer from any genetic predisposition towards or history of heart disease or cardiovascular dysfunction, but the potential negative health impact of using large quantities of saturated fat outweighs all hormone related benefits, therefore of all nutrients, saturated fat should comprise the lowest overall percentage. A bodybuilder avoiding all forms of saturated fat can achieve amazing results, as I produced over 60 pounds of muscle mass while eating a diet extremely low in saturated fat, and I do not feel that fat in general, including saturated, will have a dramatically positive impact on muscle building, but will derail progress if significant carbohydrates are sacrificed in favor of this added fat consumption.</p>
<p>A prudent and properly constructed diet plan will center around a variety of nutrients for maximum health and muscle building, including protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats, with saturated fat consumed in moderation for those who are not predisposed to cardiovascular related medical issues, and when doing so, the downside of carbohydrates that haunt the progress of many bodybuilders will be averted, and the body will receive a wide range of nutrients for optimal function, both in terms of defense against disease, and total muscle gained. </p>
<p>A final word of warning &#8211; for those bodybuilders who currently integrate fat into their diet plan, by all means avoid unhealthy forms of fat, such as trans fat, fried food, etc, as the fats in such foods are destined to deposit themselves inside of blood vessels, leading to serious cardiovascular complications. The majority of health issues experienced in western civilization are linked to poor behavior and unhealthy food choices, with one of the most common infractions involving unhealthy fat consumption. Yet, with so many tasty food choices available that are also extremely beneficial to muscle building and health, there is no legitimate reason to consume damaging foods, even when eating at restaurants. Bodybuilding is not only a hobby based on maximum muscle building, but also involves improving overall health and well being, therefore choosing the proper types of foods is no less important than the weight lifting workout itself.</p>

<p>Natural bodybuilding is actually a lifestyle choice. It is not only about lifting weights, but a positive approach to life must be adopted. A healthy lifestyle is an integral part of living the natural bodybuilding life.</p>

<p>Ensure that you get proper sleep. Eight to nine hours sleep is required to enable your body to have enough rest, so that you are ready to face your day with enthusiasm and vigor. Eat a proper wholesome breakfast first thing in the morning. Forget the sugary type and try and get cereal that has high fiber content. Oat bran is a perfect example, but there are many other cereals that are high in fiber and low in sugar. Your body has to be properly fuelled to face the challenges of the day.</p>

<p>Choose a time to train that suits your lifestyle. Some people find it best to train early in the morning, before family, kids and work commitments get in the way. Others may prefer to train in the evening when the battles of the day are over. They feel more relaxed and look forward to spending some time in the gym or at home and can train without any disruptions from outside sources.</p>

<p>Natural bodybuilding does not require complicated equipment to get started. Free weights are an excellent choice and by using free weights the body is more suitable to adjust to the new stress placed upon it. Almost all exercises performed with free weights will require you to bring in some other muscle group to help balance and control the weight in your hands. This is a more natural way of training as opposed to using machines which isolate each muscle group. Free weights will give you the bulk you are seeking and if you need to lose weight it will make you leaner as weight training is very demanding and burns fat at an alarming rate.</p>

<p>If you are a beginner, stick to training the major muscle groups using only barbells and dumbbells. Your body will adapt remarkably quickly and you will soon see results in the mirror in a short time. Don&#8217;t be tempted into any quick muscular gains and forget vanity muscles for the time being. Two or three workouts per week is all that is required. The muscles need ample time to rest and recover. It is in the resting phase that muscles grow bigger and stronger.</p>

<p>Many women are afraid to train with weights believing that they will achieve intense muscle mass and density. However, this is not the case. Using light to moderate weights for an hour a day will build a lean, healthy body that looks good. Don&#8217;t let the pictures of professional female bodybuilders scare you. It is unlikely that the average woman can build such muscle mass. You would need to train with very heavy weights for hours a day. Do you really have the time and commitment to do that?</p>

<p>There are no winners or losers in natural bodybuilding. Each person is investing in his or her own health and even small successes will enhance your body for years to come. You will have lower stress levels, better blood pressure, a good heartbeat and a pulse for life.</p>
